Why can't I open an e-Apostille on my phone
If we've just sent you your UK e-Apostille and you're trying to open it on your phone or tablet — only to be met with an error, a blank screen, or what looks like a password prompt — don't panic. You haven't done anything wrong, and your document isn't broken.
This is actually one of the most common questions we get here at The Apostilles Group, and the good news is, there is a straightforward explanation.
It's not a password… it's your device.
Here's what's really going on.
e-Apostilles issued in the UK come with a digital signature embedded in them. Think of it like an invisible, encrypted seal of authenticity — it's what makes the document legally valid and verifiable.
The problem is that most smartphones and tablets simply aren't built to handle these kinds of encrypted signatures. When your device tries to open the file and can't process that digital signature, it doesn't quite know what to do — and sometimes that shows up as a password request, a warning message, or the document just refusing to load properly.
There's no password to enter. Your device just isn't equipped to read that layer of the document.
What should you do?
The fix is simple: open your e-Apostille on a laptop or desktop computer instead.
A standard PC or Mac will have no trouble processing the digital signature and displaying your document correctly. If you don't have one handy, a library computer or a friend's laptop will do the job.
Once you're on a desktop, we'd also recommend downloading the document and saving a copy somewhere safe — cloud storage like Google Drive or Dropbox works well, so you always have access to it when you need it.
Is this a UK-specific problem?
Not at all. This is a worldwide issue with how digital signatures are handled across different devices and operating systems. It's not something specific to UK e-Apostilles, and it's not something that The Apostilles Group — or any issuing authority — can fix.
The technology behind digital signatures is robust and secure, which is exactly why it's used for official documents. The trade-off is that not every device is set up to read them yet, particularly on mobile.
Quick Recap
Your e-Apostille is fine — there's nothing wrong with it
The issue is your mobile device not being able to process the embedded digital signature
There's no password — your device is guessing that’s the issue
Switch to a laptop or desktop and it should open without any issues
