what DOES apostille MEAN?

The word apostille refers to a part of the Hague Convention, ratified by 19 countries in October 1961 and now applicable to 83 countries across the world, standardising acceptance practice for foreign public documents with an apostille.

It means that public documents executed in the territory of one Member Country can be prepared for use in another Member Country.

The following are deemed to be public documents according to the Hague Convention (Apostille):

a)  documents emanating from an authority or an official connected with the Courts;

Examples - Decree Nisi, Decree Absolute, Adoption Order, etc.

b)  administrative documents;

Examples - Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates, HMRC Letter of Confirmation of Residence, other HMRC Correspondence, Companies House documents.

c)  notarial acts;

Examples - Any document prepared by a Notary Public in England (not any other UK Notary jurisdiction).

d)  official certificates which are placed on documents signed by persons in their private capacity, such as official certificates recording the registration of a document or the fact that it was in existence on a certain date and official and notarial authentications of signatures.

Examples - Educational Certificates (GCSE, A-Level, Degree, TEFL, etc.), Powers of Attorney, etc.

you may need an apostille for:
